Virginia State Government Psychologist II (NGRI) in Williamsburg, Virginia

Position Information

Job Description

Eastern State Hospital (ESH) is seeking a Clinical Psychologist to join our Psychology Department in working with individuals acquitted Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity. ESH is a state of the art campus, situated on 500 acres, consisting of two patient care buildings with 300 patients, and a highly skilled staff of over 900. Eastern State Hospital is part of the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS) system, and is accredited by the Joint Commission. The hospital is located in Williamsburg, which is located near several large cities and beaches, including Richmond, Virginia Beach, Washington DC and Baltimore.

The incumbent will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team providing treatment to individuals adjudicated Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity (NGRI) as they work through a graduated privileging system. It is dynamic and engaging work centered on risk management treatment for patients along a wide continuum of mental health issues and functioning levels. Treatment occurs within a model of graduated community reintegration that allows for developing treatment alliances and comprehensive treatment interventions. The psychologist oversees the significant role of completing evaluations for the courts and for privileging committee review for each privilege level a patient attains. The psychologist will also provide expert testimony in court for annual and conditional release hearings, provide individual therapy and facilitate psychotherapy groups fit toward their interests, and maintain treatment team responsibilities with a collaborative team. As NGRIs represent a growing population often with unique treatment needs, there will also be opportunities to participate in program development for addressing a wide range of mental health issues for NGRI treatment, to include milieu interventions and group modules. In addition, we are happy to accommodate interests that may include community engagement and/ or public policy development, and research. Additionally, there are continuing education opportunities and trainings through the Institute of Law, Psychiatry, & Public Policy at University of Virginia. ESH also partners with several local universities, and there is an opportunity to participate in supervision within our internship program through Eastern Virginia Medical School as a supervisor for doctoral interns placed at our facility.
