This position is with the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry in Surry County. This is an hourly/wage position and is limited to 1500 hours within a 12-month period. This position is not eligible for the state benefit package.

The Hampton Roads District is seeking Hourly/Wage Ferry Chief Engineers to provide a safe and efficient ferry service across the James River. This position operates all machinery as per USCG and VDOT regulations and policies and recognized engineering practices. This position performs all required drills and crew training, maintains vessel readiness for USCG inspections, and performs other duties as assigned to maintain the safety, cleanliness and overall operation of the ferry and facility. This position is designated as essential and as such, all duties associated with this job are required during emergency situations which may include but are not limited to inclement weather, disaster response, and emergency operations in accordance with DPM 1-27, Staffing for Emergency Events.
Knowledge and ability to operate and monitor main engines and auxiliary machinery on ferry vessels. Ability to maintain records and reports and submit on schedule. Ability to perform measures for security and emergency response. Ability to perform measures for proper passenger management. Ability to take action to ensure workplace safety. Must possess a US Coast Guard license as Chief Engineer of motor vessels of at least 4000 HP.
A drivers license valid in Virginia. References, work history, and DMV records will be verified prior to employment. Hold a US Coast Guard license as Chief Engineer of motor vessels of at least 4000 HP. Experience maintaining machinery on motor vessels. Ability to obtain and maintain a TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Credential) card. Position requires pre-employment physical and random drug screening.
