Duties

A typical day in the life of an Occupational Health Nurse

  • Develops programs based on current trends and policies to enhance quality of care.
  • Performs work site visits in collaboration with others to evaluate health hazards.
  • Provides treatment for work and non-work related injuries and illnesses.
  • Provides nursing assessment, diagnosis and treatment, nursing care of occupational and non occupational injuries and illnesses.
  • Follows up on occupationally related medical illnesses, injuries, job related incidents, etc.
  • Tracks employees with occupational medical conditions. nursing care for occupational injuries and illnesses base upon nursing process.
  • Recognizes the more insidious health effects frequently produce by long term chronic exposures to toxic chemicals or harmful physical agents.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet the following Basic Requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess a degree or diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed.

In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: recognizing or identifying harmful physical agents/potential health hazards/toxic chemicals and the effects; providing clinical nursing care and occupational health and safety nursing services to employees in relation to their occupations and working environments, and providing treatment and administering care for illnesses of occupational origin and injuries that occur at the workplace; OR have successfully completed all requirements for a doctoral degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education in nursing with a concentration in a field of nursing (e.g., teaching, a clinical specialty, research, administration, etc.) or in a closely related non-nursing field directly applicable to the requirements of the position.

COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be combined to meet the total qualification requirements.

This position has two selective placement factors that will be used to screen out ineligible candidates. The selective placement factors are active, current registration as a professional nurse in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States and Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Work is performed in a health care setting where there is exposure to contagious disease, radiation, infection. Gloves, gowns and masks are frequently necessary.
