Columbia Pipeline Group Operator LNG in Chesapeake, Virginia

General Information

Reporting to the Team Leader, Chesapeake LNG, the Operator serves as an outside operator to manipulate valves, operate motors, pumps, fans and other equipment controls, read gauges and observe equipment while shift operator in control room starts, stops or makes changes during processing operations.

Responsibilities

  • Operates, maintains, and repairs LNG processing equipment, which includes: centrifugal and reciprocating compressors for natural gas and refrigerant; natural gas liquefaction equipment; cooling towers, LNG pumps, LNG storage tank, vaporizers, water pumps, heat exchanges, gas purification equipment, pneumatic and electrical controls, vales, etc.

  • Under direction of the Shift Operator starts or stops liquefaction or vaporization equipment in proper sequence by manipulating valves and controls.

  • Patrols plant operating area, and monitors equipment by observing gauges, visualinspections, and sound.

  • Records instrument readings and prepares report on operating equipment and changes charts.

  • Must maintain constant alertness for pressure changes and equipment failures.

  • Works on alternate shifts involving 24-hour period.

  • Checks and maintains equipment oil and water levels, and monitors temperature, pressure and flow.

  • Tests and adds chemicals as necessary to cooling water in condenser tower.

  • Adds refrigerant.

  • Cleans strainers and filters.

  • Blow down and purge systems.

  • Sandblast and paints.

  • Janitorial dutie and other basic housekeeping duties as required;

  • Operates farm tractor and hand tools.

  • Performs yard work and plows snow.

  • Inspect fire control equipment.

  • Performs or assists in overhauls and general repair and maintenance of plan equipment during periods of plan shutdown or emergency including: rebuilding compressors, electric motors, rebuilding valves, repairing drive belts, compressor gearbox and motor alignments, etc.

  • Calibrates and tests gauges.

  • Using PC and/or hand held device, completes Work Orders, enters data into Job Plans, creates new Work Orders, etc. in CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System - Maximo or SMART);

  • Performs incipient fire control / response duties;

  • Other tasks as required.

Qualifications

  • Willing to perform basic housekeeping duties as required.

  • Capable of receiving, understanding, and carrying out written and verbal instructions.

  • Ability to make sound judgements and to act on own initiative.

  • Must be dependable in terms of adherence to deadlines and presence on the job.

  • Must have general knowledge of use of computers;

  • Must demonstrate basic personal computer (PC) skills, and must have the ability to obtain basic skills in using a hand held computer.

  • Able to obtain basic skills in using CMMS (SAP/Maximo and SMART);

  • Willing to train for the duties of Shift Operator and perform such duties as required.

Education / Experience

  • One or two years technical training and/or experience in mechanics, O2 plant operations, HVAC operations, auxiliary equipment, and compressor repair preferred.

  • Average knowledge of basic math needed to read charts based on mathematical calculations.

  • Must be willing to work shift work and be willing to work overtime (5-10%) and be available for call-outs.

*This position requires candidates to:

  • Have and maintain a valid driver’s license;

  • Provide a drivers abstract for review;

  • Successfully complete a pre-employment medical screening, including drug and alcohol testing;

  • Meet regulatory personnel health requirements;

  • Pass regulatory required training associated with plant including basic first aid and CPR;

  • Work at heights and climb stationary steel ladders to access working platforms that range from 6-30 feet, and LNG tank stairs up to approximately 125 feet above ground.
